TEI champions Turkish contribution to F136 JSF engine |
|
|
General Electric has begun to award Tusas Engine Industries of Eskisehir, Turkey contracts for the manufacture of components for the F136 engine being developed to power the F-35 Lighting II Joint Strike Fighter (JSF). Anticipated to exceed $500M in total value, this is just the first in a series of manufacturing contracts that will be offered to TEI in the coming months.
Under this initial contract, TEI will manufacture the Stage 1 Low Pressure Turbine disk, the forward compressor shaft, and numerous actuation components for the System Development and Demonstration (SDD) phase of the F136 program. With a value of $1.2M for the first 14 engine sets, the contract provides complex rotating components for the 40,000 lb. thrust-class military fighter engine, due to run again in 2008 as part of the SDD program. Total program value for this contract is $129M. The award follows TEI’s successful production of forward shafts for earlier F136 Phase III test engines.
The contract is a prime example of continued Turkish industrial involvement in the F136 power plant and the JSF program overall. Earlier this year, TEI won a contract to provide design engineering and analysis for the F136, and for other GE military and commercial engines as well. GE also recently awarded TEI over $700M of manufacturing contracts for commercial engine parts. The GE Rolls-Royce Fighter Engine Team (FET) has indicated that the Turkish contribution to the F136 will increase.
Jean Lydon-Rodgers of General Electric and President of the FET said, “We are very pleased with TEI’s continued involvement in the F136 Engine Program. TEI’s expertise in aerospace manufacturing is a valuable addition to the team of renowned international aerospace companies that will help us to develop this world-class engine for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. We remain committed to actively involving JSF International Partners in the development of the F136.”
TEI Chairman Aydyn Okan said, “We are thrilled with this business opportunity. JSF F136 project will take both companies to the next level in our long-lasting relationship. Starting from the Pre-SDD phase, TEI has been manufacturing engine hardware for the developing engines. With the subject agreement, TEI will produce more components in the upcoming years. The low pressure turbine disk, the forward compressor shaft, complex rotation and various actuation components for the F136 engine are good examples for TEI’s increasing involvement in this program. TEI will keep on supporting this project in all activities from parts manufacturing thru design.“
The FET comprises GE Aviation in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA and Rolls-Royce plc in Bristol, England; and Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. In August 2005, the FET was awarded a $2.4 billion System Development and Demonstration contract to develop its F136 engine for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program. This SDD phase will run through September 2013. The F136 Initial Service Release is planned in 2012 at which time the first F136 production engines will begin deliveries.

TEI and GE Aviation make Turkey an Advance Technology Base: Turkiye Technology Center is established |
|
|
In Turkiye Technology Center (TTC) which will be realized in the year 2008 as an engineering alliance, TEI and GE engineers will design and develop technology for all GE Aviation’s commercial and military aircraft engines.
Ankara, Nov. 16, 2007 – Tusas Engine Industries Inc. (TEI) and GE Aviation (USA), announced the establishment of the mutual engineering initiative Turkiye Technology Center (TTC), that will position Turkey as an advance technology center, with a signing ceremony. In the ceremony which was realized with attendances of Mr. Vecdi Gonul -Minister of National Defense, Mr. Murat Bayar – Undersecretary for Defense Industries, TEI and GE’s top level officials were also present.
In TTC which will be established in Istanbul Gebze Free Zone, initially 55 engineers and in near future 240 engineers will be employed. Within TTC, the employed engineers from GEMTC (GE Maramara Technology Center, GE Aviation’s Engineering Center in Free Zone) and TEI, will design and develop technology for commercial and military aircraft engines.
Through TTC, which is based on the TEI-GE cooperation success in F136 Engine Project which is developed for Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) by GE-Rolls-Royce Fighter Engine Team, it is targeted to strengthen TEI’s strategic partnership with GE. Under the scope of this project, which will be a milestone regarding Turkish Aviation Industry’s enhancement and R&D activities, TEI will play an important role also in design and development of new technologies for GE Aviation’s all commercial and military engine components. New founded engineering, production and repair technology capabilities, by courtesy of TTC, will carry TEI to a more important place as a design and technology developing partner rather than being a critical material producer to GE Aviation and engine service subcontractor.
Long term relation of GE and TEI, has started in 1985 with the production, assembly and test of F110 engines which are used in F-16 aircrafts which are in Turkish Air Forces’ fleet. In TEI’s Eskisehir plant, many complex parts for the most developed aircraft engines are produced including important parts of F136 engine which is used in JSF.

First Flight of A400M Aircraft |
|
|
Airbus A400M military transportation aircraft empowered by 4 ea TP400-D6 turboprop engines, desgin and production are carried out by Europrop International (EPI) has successfully realized its first flight on December 11,2009 in Seville, Spain.
During the first flight which lasted for approximately 3,5 hours, fundamental aircraft characteristics including strength and acceleration features of TP400-D6 engine for different velocities and altitudes have been tested.
TP400-D6 engine, in which three shaft technology is implied, is the most powerful engine designed and produced up to now in the western world with 11000 hp. The total duration of flight tests has exceeded 3500 hours by ground tests in 6 test centers in Europe and flight tests carried out on C-130 aircraft empowered by 1 ea TP400-D6 engine, within the context of engine development tests.
TEI has been participating in TP400-DP6 project as risk and revenue partner with Spanish company, Industria de Turbopropulsores S.A. (ITP). Within this context, TEI is responsible from front bearing structure, propeller gearbox supporting bars, primary nozzle, exhaust cone modules of the engine;design, development, prototype manufacturing, assembly, test and serial production of special test equipments and after sales services.
