Development of Additive Manufacturing of Ti alloys Using Electron Beam Melting
In the scope of the ELEKTRON Project, the capability to manufacture titanium alloys, titanium aluminates, and nickel superalloy components used in the aerospace sector using the Electron Beam Melting (EBM) method has been established in Türkiye using domestic and national resources.
Supported by the Secretariat of Defence Industries (SSB) and launched following a contract signed in December 2017, the ELEKTRON Project has produced various prototypes using the EBM process with materials such as Inconel 718, Ti6Al4V, and Ti-48Al-2Cr-2Nb (Ti-Al).
Within the scope of the project, Inconel 718—suitable for the high-load and high-temperature conditions in turbine engines—Ti6Al4V—preferred for cold-section components due to its low density, high toughness, and oxidation resistance—and Ti-48Al-2Cr-2Nb—used in power turbine modules due to its low density, high oxidation resistance, and high-temperature strength— (Ti-Al) materials were selected.
The ELEKTRON Project, which facilitated the accumulation of knowledge and experience in Electron Beam Melting (EBM) additive manufacturing technology, was successfully completed in 2021 following testing and validation of the produced prototypes. TEI’s capabilities in EBM technology have been demonstrated through component, rig, and engine-level tests.
The knowledge gained through the ELEKTRON Project continues to meet the needs of ongoing proprietary engine projects using domestic resources.
